Ten Great Reasons to Brush Your Teeth

August 23, 2018

At Artful Smiles we say that oral health is more than healthy teeth – your mouth reflects your general health and well being. Therefore, at Artful Smiles we make it a priority to take care of the whole person and not just your smile.

But, being a Tooth Doctor, teeth are my specialty and I am here to get on my soap box again to stress importance of brushing when it comes to overall oral health.

Here it is, 10 great reasons you should brush your teeth:

  1. Save Money
  2. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound in cure! Regular daily home care such as brushing and flossing will prevent potential problems and leave you with lower dental bills.

  1. Prevent Gum Disease
  2. Inflammation of the gums, referred to as Gingivitis, is caused by plaque and bacteria eliciting a immune response leading to swollen gums that bleed easily. If left untreated, it can lead to irreversible periodontal disease and cause loss of bone and eventually to loss of teeth. Daily brushing, flossing and regular dental cleaning limits plaque accumulation and therefore, prevents gum disease from ever starting.

  1. Remove Stains
  2. The mild abrasives in toothpaste help reduce tooth staining by removing debris and surface stains. That helps coffee and tea stains to appear lighter, keeping your smile bright.

  1. Have a Healthy Baby
  2. Gum disease is found to increase the risk of premature birth and lower the birth weight of a baby. It also found to be one of the many causes of delayed conception and impotence.

  1. Reduce Risk of Heart Disease and Stroke
  2. Plaque that accumulates around the teeth can dislodge and travel through the bloodstream. This results in increased risk of a heart attack or stroke.

  1. Prevent or Reduce Diabetes
  2. Gum disease that is resulting in inflammation makes it harder to control blood glucose.  The relationship between diabetes and gum disease is a two-way, in that people with diabetes are more susceptible to developing serious periodontal disease. In this two way relationship, uncontrolled gum disease has a potential to affect blood glucose levels and contribute to the progression of diabetes.

  1. Fresh Breath
  2. Let’s be real, your mouth will have a swampy stink if it is not cleaned at least once a day, so clean it regularly.

  1. Be Kissable
  2. Please refer to my fresh breath point. Plus who wants to kiss someone with food between their teeth? Brushing helps in this department by removing food and debris that accumulates on the teeth.

  1. Prevent Dementia
  2. There is correlation between poor oral health and developing dementia. So, add your toothbrush to the list for prevention, along with Sudoku and crossword puzzles.

  1. Reduce Sensitivity
  2. Toothpaste is full is minerals that work hard to reduce the effects of acids that are produced by bacteria, reducing teeth sensitivity and protecting the enamel surface of the tooth.

So, two minutes twice a day of brushing your teeth can save your life! Or at least improve your quality of life.
