It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

We skipped fall and went straight into winter in Chicago, including everything that winter brings. We are in hibernation mode, enjoying more indoor activities like movies, games and warm drinks. But with these treats, like coffee and tea or even red wine, we are seeing more STAINS! Now, stain alone does not harm your teeth but they are less bright when taking pictures with your family and friends. The stain also creates a rougher surface on your nice smooth enamel, making it easier for plaque to attach itself on top of the stain. Think of it this way, if you leave a cup of coffee or tea sitting out for hours the stain creates a ring around the cup, which is harder to remove when you are washing your cup. The same happens with our teeth, so we need to remove the stains right away. That can be accomplished by adding an extra teeth brushing in the middle of the day or with an electric toothbrush, which does the hard work for you! Now, when the plaque is left on your teeth too long, it begins to “harden” or calcify, and can harbor bacteria that is harmful for your teeth, gums, and overall health. With the holidays right around the corner and with all the yummy treats they bring like gingerbread cookies, pies, hot apple cider, teas, and sticky toffee, stay conscious of your sugar intake. Sipping allows the bacteria in our mouths more time to process the sugar and covert into acids, which leads to cavities.
